Louis Frére-Harvey - Sound Composer

After completing studies at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Louis began his career writing, performing and educating as a percussionist. Following an introduction into electronic music production, Louis successfully toured Australia performing original electronic music compositions in nightclubs under the duo ‘Command Q’. Command Q saw global support from the biggest names in Popular Electronic Music including Diplo, Skrillex, Alison Wonderland and RL Grime. Command Q also signed releases under multiple US labels, Mad Decent, OWSLA and TWONK records. Louis furthered his passion for composing electronic music across disciplines, through an introduction into the Contemporary Dance world, working as a Lecturer and Repetiteur for WAAPA. This discovery began collaborations with independent dancer Andrew Barnes for Perth Fringe Festival 2018, and a collaboration with choreographer/dancer Noah Jimmy in developing works for Hidden Movement Festival and STRUT dance’s 2018 Shortcuts Season. From here Louis moved into larger-scale works such as ’Structural Dependency’ which saw a collaboration between choreographer Brooke Leeder, Lighting designer Nemo GP and 9 independent dancers to create a unique movement installation for PSAS Fremantle.

The latter half of 2018 saw Louis accepted for a residency at TasDance’s Artist in Residence program alongside Robert Tinning and Noah Jimmy, as well as the second development of Structural Dependency and the completion of Perth French Theatre’s full-length production of Tempête - The story of Helen Keller.

Louis combines his training in percussion, his passion for electronic dance music and his understanding of movement, to create energetically percussive compositions, uncovering the origins of rhythm within the body and its relationship to the music.
